The Short Answer
The short answer is at least 3 full days in the Parks which usually means you stay 4 nights. If that doesn’t fit your schedule, then see below for how we’d handle trips of different lengths.
Our typical trip length is 4 nights with 3.5 Park Days with the partial day falling on our last day, so we have 4 mornings in the Parks. Each day you add to your ticket is discounted more, so the 4th day costs less than the earlier days.
Five days is the maximum ticket you can buy at Disneyland. During Christmas, we do 4.5 Park days (five nights). There is more entertainment, food, good vibes and shopping and it’s our favorite time to visit.

Getting the most out of a multi-day trip includes a park hopper ticket. Check out our post Essential Guide to Buying Tickets at Disneyland.
Visit Other Places in Southern California
Another consideration is extending your trip to visit other fantastic places in Southern California. One close place we love is Newport Beach. We visit Balboa Island, ride bikes on the boardwalk and rent a boat on Newport Bay. We also love hiking in Malibu and visiting San Diego.
Summary of Trip Lengths and Considerations
Below are our recommendations for Disneyland trips of different lengths.
| Number of Park Days | Considerations |
|---|---|
| 4 to 5 days | This is more time than most people need. It’s great for a more relaxed pace. There’s time to enjoy afternoons at the hotel pool and visit Newport Beach for an afternoon. More time for events like Halloween Oogie Boogie Bash, Christmas, and the Food and Wine Festival. Experience all the marquee entertainment (Fireworks, Fantasmic, World of Color, Parades) – always check entertainment calendar. Park Hopper tickets are priced more efficiently for this many days, so consider adding that. For a 4 day trip, we start at Disneyland for 3 of those days. Disneyland has two times more rides than California Adventure Park. |
| 3 days (recommended) | Enough time to experience most rides and other activities. If you stay 4 nights, then you can choose to do and extra ½ day on your departure day. Do two mornings at Disneyland and one morning at California Adventure. If you do a ½ day on departure then consider which Park to end at. If you have Early entry then do the Park that has Early Entry. If you don’t, then do the other Park. Park Hopper tickets are worth it for this many days. |
| 2 days | Two days is not enough, but if that’s all you have then we’d start both mornings at Disneyland. Get a park hopper and work California Adventure into the afternoons/evenings. If you don’t get park hopper tickets, then we would visit only Disneyland. We recommend getting park hopper tickets so you can visit both Parks. Disneyland is bigger and it’s a 2-day Park. Visit California Adventure Park on your next visit. It’s a great Park so that’s why we say to go for at least 3 days. |
| 1 day | This is limiting, so focus on your priorities. Choose Disneyland as your only Park. 1 day is better than no days! |
Early Entry and Which Days to Visit Which Park
One complication to the above is Early Entry provided to Disney hotel guests. They get in 30 minutes before the Park opens, but not all rides are open. It alternates Parks each day, so only one Park has Early Entry each day.
Early Entry is at California Adventure Park on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and at Disneyland on Saturday, Thursday, and Tuesday. That can be a bad lineup for a long weekend trip. We like to start more days at Disneyland than at California Adventure.
We enjoy Early Entry, but Disney offers more days at California Adventure and we want more days at Disneyland. Disneyland has twice the rides so it’s more important to visit Disneyland for most mornings.
For this reason, we sometimes skip Early Entry to California Adventure Park and instead go to Disneyland.
Starting Park Considerations for 3 or 4 Day Trip
All this advice assumes you will get to the Parks early and take advantage of the mornings. This is the best time to get on the most rides with the shortest lines. Be there before the Parks open. It’s important.
* On a 3-day trip, start at Disneyland twice. Adjust as needed to get Disneyland for 2 of your 3 starts. If you have Early Entry, start your 3 day trip on Tuesday or Thursday to get Early Entry each day.
| Day | Park the Has Early Entry | Non-Early Entry Guests Start Here |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | California Adventure* | Disneyland |
| Monday | California Adventure* | Disneyland |
| Tuesday | Disneyland | California Adventure* |
| Wednesday | California Adventure* | Disneyland |
| Thursday | Disneyland | California Adventure* |
| Friday | California Adventure* | Disneyland |
| Saturday | Disneyland | California Adventure* |
On a 4-day trip, we still start the morning at Disneyland for 3 of the 4 days. We mostly stay at Disney hotels so we usually have Early Entry. To maximize our Early Entry, we make Thursday our first day:
- Thursday Early Entry at Disneyland
- Friday Early Entry at California Adventure
- Saturday Early Entry at Disneyland
- Sunday no Early Entry at Disneyland for 1/2 day then fly home
With no Early Entry – it’s better to start your 4-day long weekend trip on a Friday:
- Friday start at Disneyland (Early Entry guests are at California Adventure)
- Saturday start at California Adventure (Early Entry guests are at Disneyland)
- Sunday start at Disneyland (Early Entry guests are at California Adventure)
- Monday start at Disneyland (Early Entry guests are at California Adventure)
You get the idea. Consider Early Entry whether you are at a Disney hotel or not. Choose the right starting day for your vacation to best fit your morning Park planning.
Summary
In summary, your budget and other plans will dictate how long you spend at Disneyland. There is much to enjoy for any trip length. Since Hotels are a big-ticket item, check our post on Hotel Choices at Disneyland.
